Artist Bio Jewelry artist, Rachel Savané, answers the question, “How long have you been doing this?” with the concise answer, “My adult life.” Her BFA in Crafts/Metals at the University of Illinois provided a solid foundation of skills and art reflections if not clues as to how an artist can make a living. In the spirit of “what now?”, she embraced her cultural curiosity. Rachel served in the Peace Corps in Guinea for two and a half years. A whirlwind romance with a Guinean man, Mr. Savané, lead to more adventure moving back to Kentucky where she had lived prior to Peace Corps, helping him learn English and settling in to the hectic American life. The couple were able to purchase a house after a year and simultaneously welcomed their first child. The house was the key to starting the art career. The idea of having a studio in the home was instantly appealing and Rachel began showing at juried art fairs soon thereafter. Rachel’s designs evolved constantly even when she and her husband welcomed two more children during the art fair years. She has always had an affinity for gemstones and she considers them the star of the show, utilizing only one gem per piece in order to glorify it. Most often her designs have a streamlined, simple beauty to them. Her appreciation of silver as her medium feels correct as it is a colorless metal, it goes with all the stones. Fabrication techniques are her specialty and with decades of work under her belt, she has honed the skills and even invented a few techniques along the way. As many experience, her confidence in her work had to evolve. She had unusual ideas about, for example, earring hooks. The French hook dictating how earrings function bothered her from the factory-made aspect to the super symmetrical uniformity of them. She began making hooks herself. Still they had that symmetry, but her designs were mirror opposites and asymmetrical. She began swooping the earwires to the side and was astonished that they still functioned very well. One day she formed the earwire in the opposite direction and put them in her ears from back to front. Fearing ridicule at art fairs, she displayed this pair of earrings in an obscure corner at the next showing. Very early in the show, the earrings were purchased and she thought she had dodged a bullet to have voided the display of the abomination. She did not repeat the idea for several years, until the confidence grew. Now her asymmetrical and mirror opposite earring designs are often ‘Reverse Hook”, as she calls them. Rachel’s work continues to evolve and the variety of gemstones grows. There are many more surprises to her designs and the functionality of the adornment is always on her mind. She intends to continue to show at her gallery and studio in downtown Lexington KY and maintain her rotating website as pieces sell and she creates new work.
